The world’s biggest companies that have switched to LEDs

Companies that have made the switch to LEDs

From savings in electricity and maintenance bills to decreased carbon footprint, a lot of companies are turning to energy efficient LED lighting to cut down operational costs, improve their bottom lines and solidify their environmental credentials.

Here are five big-name overseas companies realising the benefits of LED lighting in a big way.

Chase Bank

In February this year, it was announced that around 5,000 Chase Bank branches will undergo LED retrofits involving a total of 1.4 million LED lamps. Covering a projected retail banking space of 25 million square feet, the project is expected to be completed by 2017. This will cut the company’s lighting energy use by 50 percent.

Santander

Santander started rolling out a retrofit project covering the banking company’s 800 branches and 14 office buildings in the UK, which is expected to cut energy costs by more than 50 percent. The project is backed by the UK Green Investment Bank and Sustainable Development Capital Limited with an investment of GBP 17.5 million. The installation involves 90,000 LED light fittings and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

GM

In 2013, car manufacturer General Motors implemented a retrofit at its Lordstown site in Ohio, replacing its old lighting system of 1000-watt and 400-watt metal halide fixtures with more than 5,600 LED light fittings. In the first phase of the installation alone, which involved 1,600 LED fittings, the site’s power consumption was reduced by more than 80 percent.

Delta Airlines

In a bid to improve operating and maintenance costs for its whole fleet of more than 700 planes, American airline company Delta Airlines committed in April last year to replace the lighting system of its entire fleet with energy-efficient LED lighting. The USD 8 million project is scheduled to be completed by 2018.

Kroger

Aiming to improve the lighting in its service stations while cutting costs and CO2 emissions, US-based retailer The Kroger Company rolled out in November last year a multi-year LED retrofitting project. The project covers nearly 75 percent of the company’s 1,300 service centres all over the county.
